Becoming an OS #GetOutside Champion is pretty darn fabulous, but for a kit addict like me it was made even more wonderful when I saw the shiny Merrell shoe box on my seat at the launch event...
After a little swapping (the provided size 7's were too big) I chose the Moab Mid GTX Boots in Pecan. I was thrilled. I had been looking for a pair of lightweight boots for my everyday adventures and here, in their box was hopefully the answer to my quest.
I had a pair of Merrell Siren Shoes for many years, they are still just about going strong and are to this day one of the most comfortable walking shoes I have ever had. So, I had high hopes for these. Straight after the OS Launch event I bombed up to the Lake District to reset myself and couldn't wait to give the boots a good couple of days testing. As soon as I put them on they were comfortable and supportive, despite being the mens version I was surprised at how well they fitted. They have enough width around the toe to enable a good spread of the toes, I don't like a walking show or boots which constricts my toes, I like to be able to roll my feet from heel to toe and these allowed me to this very well. The lacing system is great as I can easily adjust the closeness of fit depending on the terrain, I can tighten them over the bridge and around the ankle when on rockier ground and loosen them when I want to mix my walk up with a little trail running.
The boots made of durable synthetic leather and are Gore Tex lined which means they are waterproof. I certainly tested this by having a lovely paddle in Derwentwater and splashing through the streams up on the fells. Since returning from the Lakes I have worn these boots at work for instructing all the activities in a wide range of weathers and also for many walks up on the Malverns. They have not let me down yet and my feet have remained dry and warm.
There is a good 5mm lug on the sole which means that they are grippy, which for me working on the side on the Malverns on muddy terrain every day is a godsend. Many a low ropes session on a 1:17 gradient in the mud and I haven't slipped anywhere!
To look at the Moab's have what I would call a classic Merrell look. I would possibly say that they are a little dated compared to some of the more design savvy alternatives out there. Saying that I was comfortable wearing them around Keswick in my jeans, being reasonably lightweight at only 936g they felt great.
So, if you are looking for a solid pair of waterproof boots that will take you from hill, to mountain and back down to the pub you can't go far wrong with these. They are supremely comfortable, lightweight, versatile and so far pretty indestructible.
